Moving a tunnel

Hydraulic Solutions

Powering Innovation for Civil Engineering & Construction

The new Helperzoomtunnel is now in the right place. The operation took about three hours. A tunnel weighing 6,000 tonnes was moved 45 meters to its final location. Holmatro supplied 40 new cylinders at the behest of the general contractor Civiele technieken deBoer.

Commissioned by: Civiele technieken deBoer
Location: Helperzoomtunnel, Groningen, the Netherlands

Situation

A new roadway had to be placed under the railway tracks between the Helperzoom and the Europapark: the Helperzoomtunnel. This new connection changes traffic flows in the Helpman and Coendersborg districts. A traffic plan was drawn up to ensure these districts remained liveable and the traffic situation remained safe.

Challenge

The Aanpak Ring Zuid project was started in 2017. A part of this project is the new Helperzoomtunnel. In August 2019, this 6,000-ton tunnel was taken out of service and moved 45 meters to its final location.

Solution

To move this 6,000-tonnes tunnel required Ct deBoer to initially install 40 new cylinders from Holmatro together with 32 of its proven predecessors. The HJ150S20SN-HD is the new type of hydraulic jack used. This jack can handle a 10% shear force and is equipped with screw thread Tr160*12. Ct deBoer opted to finish the new jack with a Duplex (Nickel/Chrome) cylinder housing.
