If you don&#8217;t make a good relief cut, force will remain in the structure, and the expected outcome of the technique may not occur. Therefore, it is vital for firefighters and technical rescuers to understand exactly what relief cuts do and how to apply them effectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"t\">Relative Strength and Force Distribution&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating space with hydraulic tools always revolves around understanding relative strength. A structure always yields at its weakest point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you try to lift a dashboard without a relief cut in the A-pillar (near the footwell), the ram will often deform the B-pillar instead of moving the dashboard. A well-placed relief cut saves time and prevents duplication of effort. If you complete the cut in one go, the extrication process will be faster and more efficient. This means less time at the accident scene, less strain on the victim, and faster access for medical personnel. In practice, this is rarely necessary. Sometimes a dashboard lift of just a few centimeters is sufficient to free a victim.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is therefore important that we always ask ourselves:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What space is really needed for safe extrication?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which relief cut provides us with that space most quickly and in the most controlled manner?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"in-my-next-blog-post-i-will-discuss-each-phase-in-more-detail\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Relief cuts aren&#8217;t a standalone technique, but the fundamental requirement for the success of virtually all extrication techniques.
