Lifting a construction shed at great height

Lifting a construction shed at great height

Lifting the construction shed, to its position on top of the fourth level of the Erasmus Medical Centre office tower, is a huge job that has to be done with precision. Commissioned by BAM/Ballast Nedam, Holmatro supplied double-action, high tonnage cylinders.

Situation

In 2009 BAM and Ballast Nedam started with the construction of the new university medical center, in and around the current location of the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam.

To ensure safe and conditioned construction of the 120-meter-high new office, CT deBoer built a construction shed. Four points of the construction shed were equipped with hydraulic jacks. In a five-day cycle  the shed climbed one floor at a time. How that worked is shown below.

Challenge

During the construction of the new built Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam the lifting shed on top of the high rise to be, was a true eye catcher. The ‘big white box’ was in fact a construction plant that was built on top of the fourth level of the high rise.  It is essentially a platform with a canopy within which all activities can be carried out that are necessary to deliver the complete frame of a floor within a week. When one floor was complete, the shed was able to hoist itself up in order to facilitate construction of the next floor.

Solution

The lifting of the construction shed was executed by means of Holmatro’s double-acting cylinders with hydraulic return.
